《综合英语II》课程思政教学设计

——以“《现代大学英语精读2》第5单元”为例

课程及案例简介:《现代大学英语精读2》是外语类高校翻译专业大学生必修的公共基础课。授课对象是翻译本科四年制大一学生,学生经过一学期听、说、读、写的集中训练,已具备一定的英语听力基础和相对简单的英语会话能力。但是与听、读这两项语言输入能力相比,翻译这项语言输出能力相对较弱。学生将学习"寻求速成社会"(Quick Fix Society)的概念,并探讨当今社会追求快速满足和短期效应的现象。通过阅读选定的文章,学生将能够理解社会和个人如何面临由于缺乏耐心和长远规划而产生的问题,并激发他们对于社会发展和责任感的深入思考。

外语教学与研究出版社出版的教材《现代大学英语精读2》第5单元题为“Quick Fix Society”。课文从作者的一次旅行描写出发,讲述了作者去程和回程旅途中由于不同的状态和心态而欣赏到的不同的风景和感受。侧重点是启示学生不管是旅行还是生活,我们都应该有一个平稳的心态,发现生活美好的眼睛,不仅如此,大学生应该具有的敢于探索、冒险的精神,学会欣赏美景,欣赏生活在一定程度上能够陶冶情操。同时,学生能够运用课上所学习的词汇、短语和句式来介绍国内旅游景点,讲述旅行的意义,完成单元任务“中国小导游”,由此激发学生对祖国风景的自豪感。

2. 教学策略与课程思政教学实施过程设计

本单元思政点:习近平总书记强调指出:“青年的价值取向决定了未来整个社会的价值取向,青年又处在价值观形成和确立的时期,抓好这一时期的价值观养成十分重要。”大学阶段是大学生人生观、价值观、世界观形成的重要时期,也是其个性心理成熟的关键时期。在科技迅速发展的今天,大学生获取信息的渠道和途径越来越便捷,随着信息爆炸式的增长,与之而来的是焦虑和急于求成的心态,可能带来实用主义和当下主义的深化和凸显,所以在这个关键时刻,对于大学生的生活态度教育应时而出,以引导大学生树立中国特色社会主义共同理想,筑牢大学生的精神支柱。

General Secretary Xi Jinping has emphasized that "the value orientation of the youth will determine the value orientation of the entire society in the future, and since young people are in the period when values are formed and established, it is of great importance to nurture their values during this period." The college stage is a crucial time for the formation of college students' outlook on life, values, and worldview, as well as a key period for the maturation of their individual psychological development. In today’s era of rapid technological advancement, college students have more convenient access to information, yet the exponential growth of information can also lead to anxiety and an impetuous desire for quick success. This may further deepen and highlight pragmatism and presentism. Therefore, at this critical moment, it is timely to provide education on life attitudes for college students in order to guide them to establish a common ideal of socialism with Chinese characteristics and to fortify their spiritual pillar.

1) iPrepare:呈现单元交际场景,激发学习动力

As part of the "Little Tour Guide of China" activity, you will have the opportunity to be a tour guide for a day in Xi'an, introducing foreign friends to the rich history and culture of the city. Please complete the assignment with following considerations:

Select Attractions, Plan the Itinerary, and Time Management

选择景点、安排行程、时间安排

History and Culture: While introducing the attractions, narrate the long history and splendid culture of China, showcasing the wisdom and creativity of the Chinese nation.

历史与文化:在介绍景点时,讲述中国悠久的历史和灿烂的文化,展示中华民族的智慧和创造力。

Patriotic Sentiments: By explaining the significance of Xi'an as an ancient capital, inspire admiration for Chinese history among foreign friends and express our patriotic sentiments as the new generation.

Social Development: Highlight the achievements of modern Xi'an in urban construction and development, demonstrating the tremendous changes and accomplishments since China's reform and opening up, and enhancing national pride.

Environmental Awareness: Emphasize the importance of environmental protection during the tour, protecting cultural relics and the environment, and showcasing our commitment to sustainable development.

2) iExplore :Why deferred gratification?(为什么要延迟满足?)

(1)Lead-in导入新课

诗歌朗读和分享

活动描述:开始上课时,先播木心的《从前慢》朗诵录音,简短分享学生对这首诗的初步感受。

目标:通过诗歌传达的情感和信息,让学生沉浸在慢节奏的氛围中,为接下来的话题做情感和心理上的准备。

引发思考

活动描述:教师提问,“为什么作者会觉得‘从前慢’?在你们看来,现在与以前相比,生活有哪些变化?”引导学生自由发表观点。

目标:通过问题引导学生思考现代生活的快速节奏及其背后的原因,建立起与“Quick Fix Society”主题的联系。

连接主题


活动描述:教师简要介绍“Quick Fix Society”的概念,然后指出《从前慢》中所体现的慢节奏生活与现代社会追求快速解决方案的对比关系。引用诗中特定的句子,如“信使骑马三日送达邮件,阳光走进屋子,要整整照上一天”等,来展示过去生活的节奏感和现代社会的迥异。对比阅读诗歌中英文表达,学习该类主题的表达词汇和语言结构。

活动描述:引导学生思考,在追求高效、快速解决问题的过程中,我们可能会失去什么?“从前慢”的生活节奏给我们的启示是什么?可以让学生分小组讨论,然后由三名学生通过模仿诗歌以及课文语言表达和风格,用英文分享他们的想法,教师提供引导和指导。

目标:培养学生的批判性思维,让他们意识到在快节奏的生活中,寻找平衡和内在平静的重要性,并练习该类主题的语言表达方式。

(2)Text understanding

①背景知识层面思政元素:

“We toured a Civil War battlefield and stood on the little hill that fifteen thousand Confederate soldiers had tried to take on another hot July afternoon, one hundred and twenty-five years ago, not knowing that half of them would get killed in the vain attempt. We drove slowly through main streets of sleepy Pennsylvania Dutch towns, slowing to twenty miles an hour so as not to crowd the horses and horse carriages on their way to market. We admired toy trains and antique cars in country museums and saved 70 percent in factory outlets. ”课文中作者回程游览了美国的历史遗迹,并通过其旅途的描述间接讲述了美国的历史,让学生学习类似的表达方式和思路,学习如何通过讲述生活中的场景“讲好中国故事”。让学生通过下列翻译练习学习中国历史文化,学习如何用英语讲好中国故事。

The Terracotta Warrior is not only an outstanding representative of ancient Chinese civilization but also an important part of the world's cultural heritage. Its unique historical, artistic, and archaeological value attracts the attention and research of countless people.

西安城墙不仅是中国古代军事防御工程的杰出代表,也是西安这座历史文化名城的重要标志之一。 The Xi'an City Wall is not only an outstanding example of ancient Chinese military defense engineering but also a significant symbol of Xi'an, a city rich in historical and cultural heritage.

陕西历史博物馆馆藏丰富,展品涵盖了从远古时期到明清时期的各类文物。馆内设有多个常设展厅,包括史前时期、周秦汉唐时期、宋元明清时期等展区,展示了中国古代文明的辉煌历程。

The Shaanxi History Museum boasts a rich collection of artifacts, spanning from prehistoric times to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The museum features several permanent exhibition halls, including sections on the Prehistoric Period, Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang Dynasties, as well as the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. These exhibits showcase the splendid history of ancient Chinese civilization.

②篇章理解层面思政元素:

通过让学生快速阅读,引发学生进一步思考,了解课文整体内涵,学习讨论关于“延迟满足”和“冰山理论”的内涵。

“延迟满足”是指为了获得更大的长期利益,暂时放弃眼前的即时满足。这一概念在心理学和行为经济学中得到了广泛的研究和应用。通过讨论“延迟满足”这一主题,可以帮助大学生塑造积极的价值观和人生观。从社会方面通过引入马克思主义理论,讲解马克思主义关于劳动、资本和时间价值的理论,强调延迟满足的经济和社会意义。从个人方面,引入社会主义核心价值观:结合“爱国、敬业、诚信、友善”等核心价值观,阐释延迟满足如何与这些价值观相契合。

“冰山理论”是一种管理和心理学理论,常用于解释行为和动机。根据冰山理论,人的行为只是冰山一角,隐藏在水面下的部分包括动机、价值观、信念和态度等深层次因素。通过对“冰山理论”的讨论,可以帮助大学生深入理解自身和他人的行为,从而塑造符合中国特色社会主义核心价值观的品格和能力。先向学生讲解冰山理论的基本概念,解释行为背后的深层次因素,并结合“爱国、敬业、诚信、友善”等核心价值观,探讨这些价值观如何作为深层次因素影响行为。通过分析成功人士和企业的案例,展示深层次价值观和动机在实现长远目标中的重要性。例如,讲述中国改革开放以来,许多企业和个人通过坚定的信念和价值观,最终取得了巨大的成就。

③语言知识层面思政元素(结合思辨):

Our country has become a nation in search of the quick fix—in more ways than one.(Para. 3)

Q: Have you ever find yourself in search of a quick fix in your life? Can you share with us the motivation and feeling of such a search?

By discussing about this question, students can realize that they may have already in a vicious circle of searching for short cuts in life, so it is crucial for them to realize this is an unhealthy mental state and spirit.

And we returned home refreshed, revitalized, and reeducated. This time, getting there had been the fun. (Para. 2)

Q: Have you ever visited a place in China, and had the feeling of “refreshed, revitalized, and reeducated” after visiting?

By thinking up this question, students can come up with as many tourist destinations as possible, which will arouse their love and appreciation for the beautiful scenery in China.

3)iProduce单元任务输出评价

Personal Reflection Report: Quick Fixes in My Life

Task Description: Students are required to write a personal reflection report in English on the theme of "Quick Fixes in My Life." In the report, students should describe one or more instances in their life where they sought quick solutions (such as fast food culture, instant messaging, online shopping, etc.) and reflect on the impact these quick fixes have had on their lives.

个人反思报告

任务说明:要求学生写一篇英文个人反思报告,主题为“在我生活中的Quick Fix情况”。在报告中,学生要描述自己在生活中遇到的一个或多个寻求快速解决方案的例子(如快餐文化、即时消息、网络购物等),并反思这些快速解决方案对他们生活的影响。


3. 教学效果评价与反思

本次课程依托《现代大学英语精读2》第5单元文章《Quick Fix society》,采用讨论与实践相结合的授课思路进行课程设置。本次课程的教学内容充实,教学方式着力体现多媒体综合授课以及互动式教学的优势,课前与课外的对接。在语言知识和技能传授的基础上,重在提高学生的语言实践能力,增强学生的批判思考能力。教学效果可以从以下方面进行评估:学生学习成果评估(自我评价、同伴评价); 教学内容与方法分析,分析教材内容是否符合学生需求,是否贴近学生生活实际,有助于理解“Quick Fix Society”主题。回顾教学中使用的方法,如讨论、互动等,评估哪些活动最有效,哪些需要改进;学生反馈收集,设计问卷,让学生对教学内容、自己的学习体验和课堂活动的效果等方面给出反馈,与学生进行一对一访谈,深入了解他们的学习障碍和需求;教师自省与改进,记录教师日志,记录每堂课的教学经历,包括成功的地方和挑战,以便进行自我反思和总结;同行观课与建议,邀请其他教师观看授课,收集他们的建议和反馈,作为改进的参考;教学效果统计分析,使用分数和成绩的统计对比来衡量学生在单元学习之前后的进步情况,评估学生在课堂上的参与热情和积极程度是否有提高。

本次课程设计也突出了育德之责。现代社会快节奏的生活方式和求快求效的价值导向极易影响大学生的价值观,使得一些学生可能会追求短期利益,忽视了长远发展和精神文化生活的需求。在文本中找到了相应的思政元素,通过对“急于求成的社会”的理解、相关价值观的探讨,扩展讨论了“大学生的社会主义核心价值观”的内涵,让学生认识到事物的复杂性和对待问题的多元视角,鼓励学生不盲目接受社会趋势,而是学会批判性地思考问题,从而增强自己的判断力和决策能力。激励学生去设立和追求长期目标,这种态度的培养是社会主义核心价值观中“奋斗”精神的体现,强调努力工作和持续奋斗来实现个人和社会的发展。让大学生认识到成功需要时间的积累和努力的过程,真正有价值的成就往往不是一蹴而就的,帮助于学生树立长远的事业观,遵循道德和社会规范,追求个人和集体的和谐发展。联系当下大学生扥实际情况,以润物细无声的方式将建立高尚品德和崇高理想融入到专业知识的学习中,引导学生建立社会主义核心价值观,弘扬社会正能量,为营造良好的社会氛围贡献力量。因此,本单元的学习不仅是语言知识的提升,更是价值观教育的重要组成部分,对大学生形成全面的世界观、人生观、价值观具有积极而深远的影响。

This course is based on the article "Quick Fix society" from "Modern College English Intensive Reading 2," Unit 5, adopting a teaching approach that combines discussion with practice. The teaching content is rich, focusing on the advantages of multimedia integrated teaching and interactive teaching, linking pre-class and extracurricular activities. On top of imparting language knowledge and skills, it emphasizes enhancing students' practical language abilities and their critical thinking skills. The teaching effectiveness can be assessed from the following aspects:

- Student Learning Outcomes Assessment (self-evaluation, peer evaluation);

- Analysis of Teaching Content and Methods, analyzing whether the textbook content meets students' needs and is relevant to their lives, facilitating the understanding of the "Quick Fix Society" theme. Reviewing the methods used in teaching, such as discussions, interactions, etc., to assess which activities are most effective and which need improvement;

- Student Feedback Collection, designing surveys for students to provide feedback on teaching content, their learning experience, and the effectiveness of classroom activities, and conducting one-on-one interviews with students to better understand their learning obstacles and needs;

- Teacher Reflection and Improvement, maintaining a teaching log to record experiences from each class, including successes and challenges, for self-reflection and summary;

- Peer Observation and Suggestions, inviting other teachers to observe the teaching and collecting their suggestions and feedback as references for improvement;

- Statistical Analysis of Teaching Effects, using statistical comparisons of scores and grades to measure students' progress before and after the unit study, assessing whether students' enthusiasm and participation in the class have improved.

It lets students recognize the complexity of things and the diversity of perspectives on issues, encouraging them not to blindly accept social trends but to learn to think critically, thereby enhancing their judgment and decision-making abilities. It motivates students to set and pursue long-term goals, embodying the spirit of "striving" in socialist core values, emphasizing hard work and sustained effort to achieve individual and social development. It helps students understand that success requires time and effort, and true achievements are not instantaneous, aiding in establishing a long-term career perspective, following moral and social norms, and pursuing harmonious development of the individual and the collective. By connecting with the actual situation of university students and integrating nobility and high ideals into the learning of professional knowledge in a subtle way, it guides students to establish socialist values, promote social positive energy, and contribute to creating a positive social atmosphere. Thus, learning this unit is not only about improving language knowledge but also an important part of value education, having a positive and profound impact on forming university students' comprehensive worldviews, life views, and values.
